Harald Hoffmann

Clinical Microbiologist
ID Epidemiologist
Medical & Managing Director
Dr. Harald Hoffman, IML red GmbH

Since almost 20 years, Harald Hoffmann dedicates most of his professional life to strengthening laboratory capacities for better TB diagnostics.

Under his leadership, the WHO Supranational TB-Reference Laboratory (SRL) in Munich-Gauting evolved to one of the largest mycobacteriological diagnostic centers in Europe.

After studying medicine at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University Bonn and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, Harald Hoffmann started his medical career as pediatrician at the University Childrens Hospital Cologne, Germany, before he specialized in Clinical Microbiology at the Max von Pettenkofer Institute, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

In 2004, he took over the leadership of the Institute of Microbiology and Laboratory Medicine (IML) in the South-West of Munich, that serves the WHO as Supranational Reference Laboratory.

Since ever, Harald Hoffmann was able to create a team of internationally recognized experts in the field of TB diagnostics and research, and to build nine highly active, WHO endorsed SRL-partnerships with the TB programs of Sudan, Belarus, Urkaine, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Nepal.

Harald Hoffmann used to chair the DIN committee of tuberculosis diagnostics in the German Institute of Standardization for eight years and is co-author of the current German guideline of mycobacteriological diagnostics. Harald Hoffmann gathered clinical experience during his work in hospitals in Mali, the USA and Cologne, Germany. In cooperation with the Pasteur Institute, he conducted a morbidity study on intestinal schistosomiasis in Madagascar, for which he received a doctorate from the University of Hannover. Later-on he performed studies on systematics and virulence of enterobacteria. He described new bacterial species and subspecies, analyzed the phenomenon of small colony variants, performed a national multi-centre study on the prevalence of extended spectrum betalactamases, detected a heavy-metal efflux system and the heme uptake system of E. cloacae complex. Over 40 scientific articles on intestinal schistosomiasis, Asceris lumbricoides, Enterobacter, MRSA and TB have been published by him or under his primary supervision and further 40 with him as co-author.

In May 2023, the Uzbek Health Minister awarded Harald Hoffmann the Medal for Excellence in Health Care and the title of an honorary professor in Uzbekistan.
